The Bávaro reef system stretches 32 kilometres along Punta Cana's eastern shore, a shallow coral shelf that drops from three metres to 15 within a hundred-metre swim. That geometry makes it one of the Caribbean's most forgiving snorkeling environments — warm, clear, and dense with sergeant majors, blue tangs, and the occasional hawksbill turtle cruising the elkhorn stands. The reef was mapped in detail only in 1987, when Dominican marine biologists catalogued 47 hard-coral species and confirmed that the barrier's consistent three-knot current kept visibility above 20 metres year-round.
